The Skinny: The general feeling that Rock Rap has fizzled out is whispered through the social/blogs of the internet, despite the fact that in the last 15 years Rock Rap artists have collectively sold over 120 million albums, and many of the big names like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit still headline massive festivals all over the world. There is one band you probably haven’t heard of that is beginning to emerge from the underground music scene of the west, and from the unlikely place of Salt Lake City, Utah.

“We just play music we want to listen to, we all have different influences and we throw it all together and it comes out like this.” Lead singer Andrew Boss says about his Rock Rap band The Beginning At Last. Formed by Andrew and Co-singer Eric Wolcott in 2007 in suburbia-Salt Lake City. Eric and Andrew performed in the beginning under Andrew’s Hip Hop name Simon Eleven, the evil alter ego of his. After coming up with a new name for the band and writing some songs together they added guitarist Kevin Crocheron and Brian Lantz. They have gone through a couple Djs but have never had a drummer.

The Beginning At Last has major rock and metal influences but they perform like a hip hop group, playing over digital tracks. “Its nice to have everything exactly the same every time we play it, and people in a band know how hard it is to add another person into the mix” Andrew says about not having a drummer. It doesn’t seem to hold them back any, they have now performed with major acts both hip hop and Metal, from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Yelawolf, to Sevendust and Soulfly and a lot more. They have never shy’d away from a chance to play for a large crowd, and it seems to be paying off. Their last album Have It All was released in April of 2014 and it was added to rotation at 140 college stations in the US and Canada, they also signed TV spot deals with Nascar, MTV, Nitro Circus, Ridiculousness and FoxSports.

They are definitely on their way to being a major name in the ever growing underground scene, and they like it that way. The band is self reliant and self managed and that seems to be what creative underground artists like the most, creative freedom. They are gearing up to release their new self titled album Aug 7th world wide, with a quick 1 week CD Release party tour with stops in Los Angeles Aug 4th, San Diego Aug 5th, Phoenix AZ Aug 7th and Salt Lake City Aug 8th. Their new single “Encore” is set to be released with a music video May 22nd, with a 2nd single “No Way Out ft Hed (PE)” on June 26th.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
