Truthfully, I didn’t know what to expect as I arrived at the Great Hall on March 27th for a performance by a group known as the Lemon Bucket Orkestra. LBO is Canada’s only balkan-klezmer-gypsy-party-punk-super-band. Now what exactly might that be, you may ask. Essentially they are an array of musical talents that have come together to put on one of the biggest parties I have ever seen.

From the minute I walked into the venue, I was witness to what looked like a scene out of a movie. There was a tremendous stage decorated with the band logo, accompanied by hundreds of cascading garden lights hanging from the ceiling. The Great Hall has a main floor that is set up like a dance floor with booths outlining the walls of the room, while also offering a seating area in the upper bowl section of the second floor. This allows the audience to choose how they wish to view the show, both with its own perks.

Lemon Bucket Orkestra took the stage in a fury of bright coloured garments and flashy instruments of all sorts. From this point on, the show became a dance party showcasing that LBO really knows how to get the audience in the mood. With the feel good music portrayed in their songs, it kept the audience dancing the night away. The age of the audience also varied quite significantly as there were grandparents present with their grandchildren, as well as teenagers and young adults.

What really amazed me was the amount of fun that the band looked to be during their performance. It almost appeared that they were enjoying the show almost as much as the audience, which is always a nice touch because it shows the transaction of entertainment between the artist and the audience. Having a heavy European background, there are a lot of elements of storytelling and culture that LBO contains within their music.

The band was in Toronto to showcase their second full length album Moorka, which was recorded in a barn near Waterloo, Ontario. The album was released March 24th, 2015. All that can be said is that this group of people know what showmanship is, and can entertain an audience like no other. Be sure to keep an ear out for anything LBO in the future.
