Having played an integral role in revolutionary bands Audioslave and Rage Against The Machine, Tim Commerford is no stranger to creating innovative music. His new project Future User kicks it up a gear; featuring a style of music he dubs “Progtronic”, in which two seemingly polar genres are fused together into a happy medium. Their new album, fully loaded with ultra-unique ideas and sounds, all the way down to the ultramodern hashtag in the title, #SteroidsOrHeroin, is certain to be a globally trending topic in the music world.

The collaboration of prog rock and electronic house music is undoubtedly outlandish, yet works impeccably well throughout #SteroidsOrHeroin. With freaky-fast and technical guitar work to appease the most adamant progressive rock fans, and the beats and drops electronic fans fawn over, this album is stacked. Future User is a breath of fresh air in a genre of music where bands inevitably sound the same, and EDM influence is taboo. By going against the grain, and blatantly disregarding what is expected of their genre, Future User has set the bar for electronic-rock bands immensely high.

Infectious songs are “Mountain Lion,” “Clockwork” and “Supernatural.” But in all honesty, describing what I hear on #SteroidsOrHeroin will not do it justice. This style of music is all about how the layers of keenly tuned and timed sound make you, as an individual, move and feel, and the fact of the matter is, the Future User experience is going to be a different journey for every listener. I encourage prog and electronic fans alike to take an adventure outside their comfort zone and embark on the sensual and eye-opening experience that is #SteroidsOrHeroin.
