Decadawn – “Solitary Confinement” [Album Review]
I have a strong feeling this independent band will be fighting off record labels with their instruments in light of this phenomenal premiere.
Featuring a sound reminiscent of 2001 Arch Enemy, with a modern death metal flair, Decadawn fuses together beautiful melodies and skull-smashing heaviness in a manner nothing short of groundbreaking on their debut LP Solitary Confinement. I have a strong feeling this independent band will be fighting off record labels with their instruments in light of this phenomenal premiere.
Frontman Louis-Charles Tardy is a master of his vocal chords, and in tracks like “Disappear” and “It All Ends Today,” effortlessly goes from hair-raising screams to cleans that are almost operatic, reminding me of the almighty Bruce Dickinson. The rest of the band is on par with Tardy’s talents and each member shines through on the album.
The title track “Solitary Confinement” is more than worthy of its name. With adrenaline-fast drumwork, epic riffs, and even a guest appearance by the legendary Tomas Lindberg of At The Gates, this piece of work is equipped to go down in melodic death metal history.
Solitary Confinement is a rare album. It is unusual that after the first play through of a band’s debut LP, I am entirely satisfied—but in the case of Decadawn, these Montreal melodic death metallers’ inaugural record is a fantastic work of titanic proportions. My biggest issue with this album has been that I’m not sure where they can go from here, when their first full-length impression on the music world is already so undeniably cataclysmal.
