Siriun – “In Chaos We Trust” [Album Review]

Coming from Brazil it’s going to be hard avoiding influences in your sound from, possibly the biggest metal band in the history of Brazilian music, Sepultura. Thankfully, progressive modern metallers Siriun put plenty of effort into their sound and, while the odd Sepultura trait sneaks in now and again, In Chaos We Trust is, on the whole, a solid, brutal, complex metal album.

Featuring the additional talents of Kevin Talley (Chimaira, Daath, etc.) behind the kit, In Chaos We Trust is unsurprisingly a bit of a beast of an album but, at the same time, it is an album with many different layers to it. From the bludgeoning close to “Transmutation” to the thunderous, juddering riffing that peppers “Intent,” there is no getting away from the fact that the backbone of this sound is brutal, modern metal, but the use of acoustic guitars, South American influences and intelligent, progressive complexities give the material something for fans of intelligent metal music to really sink their teeth into.

In Chaos We Trust is one of those recordings that you listen to once and think you’ve got it. You appreciate that it is a great release, but the beauty of the album comes with subsequent listens where you discover something new each time through. Impressive stuff from the Brazilian underground!
