Devilment – “The Great and Secret Show” [Album Review]
There are certainly enough good moments on here to suggest that they have a future, if they can polish up the rough edges that have prevented this from being a really good first effort.
Devilment’s rise has been rather rapid; let’s consider for a moment that their first-ever live show and subsequent tour was opening for Lacuna Coil, and this is in no small part due to the fact that the band features Dani Filth on vocals.
However, despite Mr Filth’s distinctive singing, you never feel that you are listening to a Cradle Of Filth album, and that is a testament to founding member Daniel Finch and the music and ideas he envisioned. In fact, The Great and Secret Show features a nice, varied mix of groove (“Even Your Blood Group Rejects Me”), thrash (“The Stake In My Heart”), and even some Indian influences (“Mother Kali”). There are, however, some moments when you feel the songs just need a little more work, a bit more fine-tuning if you will, in order for them to fully deliver.
All in all The Great and Secret Show is a solid debut from Devilment. There are certainly enough good moments on here to suggest that they have a future, that is, if they can polish up the rough edges that have prevented this from being a really good first effort.
