Scott Ian – “Speaking Words in Glasgow” [DVD Review]

A while back I had heard that Scott Ian was doing spoken word tours, and sadly, I was not able to make it to any of the dates. As a fan of Anthrax from the very beginning I was curious to see what Scott had to say, so when the opportunity came up to review this DVD, I was totally stoked. The setup is similar to a stand-up comedy show, but instead of telling jokes for 2 hours, Ian mixes things up with humor, real life stories, and towards the end, a no-holds-barred Q&A period.

With more than 30 years of recording and touring under his belt, it is no surprise that Ian has some really interesting, and at times far out, stories to share. I don’t want to spoil the set, but I will tell you there is a story about Anthrax’s early days, and a chance encounter with Lemmy while on their first promo tour of Europe, that had me laughing quite hard. My favorite story though, is a recounting of Ian’s relationship with Dimebag Darrell and the practical jokes they used to play on each other. It is hilarious and a bit bittersweet.

Ian has a knack for great storytelling and with no more than a few slides in the background, he relies on his gift of gab to entertain the audience. He does a fantastic job and I found myself drawn right into his narrative. The DVD’s final portion, the Q&A section, opens with Ian advising the audience they can ask anything they want and from there, all manner of questions ensue. Bottom line, Speaking Words in Glasgow is highly entertainment, honest, informative, and funny. Metal, and especially Anthrax fans, are going to totally dig this.
