Tesla – “Simplicity” [Album Review]

It is great to see Tesla still cranking out exciting, relevant music. I was a big fan of the band back in the late ’80s and early ’90s when their brand of unpretentious, catchy rock n roll was tearing up the charts and airwaves. Fast forward to 2014 and thankfully we find the group still writing and releasing some amazingly good, straight up rock n roll.

The edgy rocker, “MP3,” opens things off nicely with lyrics that reference the group’s ability to endure over the years, from their beginnings releasing albums on vinyl and cassette, to present day digital formats. Layered over the top of a solid driving rhythm section, Jeff Kieth’s trademark raspy vocals have never sounded so good. The proverbial icing on the cake though, are the mixes turned in by legendary audio engineer Michael Wagener, they are quite fantastic.

For me, Tesla’s music is timeless and can never really be dated. No matter what the musical trends are I think there is always going to be a market for good, solid rock n roll, which is exactly what Simplicity is. This is a terrific album and one that I am sure will find its way into many late Summer BBQs and get-togethers.
