“Tame” is our latest free song download, and this one is via Los Angeles five-piece dale (notice the lowercase “d”). Following in the footsteps of his idols, John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Kurt Cobain, lead singer, guitarist and pianist Rees Finley blends sharp lyricism, sticky melodies and the explosiveness of full-out raw punk into one delightfully quirky rock group. With their channeling of Queen, Ben Folds Five and Weezer, the Southern California band has emerged as one of the biggest names in college rock, thus far playing shows with Crash Kings, New Politics and Diplo.
Rees’ backstory of getting interested in music is interesting to say the least. At nine years old, he was first stricken with a mentally paralyzing fear of death. This fear not only created debilitating insomnia, but also landed him in the office of psychiatrist Dr. Dale Richards. Dale encouraged Rees to pursue his love of song writing which Rees spent much of his teenage years doing. When it came time for university, Rees enrolled in the Popular Music department at the University of Southern California. While pursuing his education, he met his current bandmates, Riley Knapp, Michael Groome, Jimmy Villaflor, and Jake Noveck. Originally Rees’ backing band, he quickly discovered that they took his music far beyond what he could have imagined which resulted in the creation of dale in 2013. The guys spent the summer of 2013 recording what would be their debut release, the love, dale EP which came out in January 2014.
