Electric Six – “Mustang”

Mustang is the ninth studio record from the eclectic, genre-bending rock act Electric Six. I say genre-bending because, while this is definitely a rock record, there are a plethora of outside influences as varied as disco, garage, and even old school new wave that play heavily into the mix.

Mustang is the ninth studio record from the eclectic, genre-bending rock act Electric Six. I say genre-bending because, while this is definitely a rock record, there are a plethora of outside influences as varied as disco, garage, and even old school new wave that play heavily into the mix.

I am new to the Electric Six camp so I approached this album with a tabula rasa and quickly found myself both tapping my foot and smirking at the tongue-in-cheek, often irreverent lyrics and song titles. This is party music, plain and simple. It is fun and quirky and the catchy grooves are the perfect backdrop for cutting a rug on the dance floor.

It is no stretch of the imagination to envision an enthusiastic, energetic, and perhaps intoxicated crowd grooving to this release at any of the millions of the bars and clubs across the country. That said, Mustang won’t make its way into my regular rotation, but I am fairly certain I will break it out as background noise for a shindig or two.
