CZAR – “No One Is Alone If No One Is Alive”

No One Is Alone If No One Is Alive is a heavy multi-dimensional, multi-faceted disc that caught me a bit by surprise. While I had heard of the band CZAR before I was not very familiar with their work, and I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard on this effort.

No One Is Alone If No One Is Alive is a heavy multi-dimensional, multi-faceted disc that caught me a bit by surprise. While I had heard of the band CZAR before I was not very familiar with their work, and I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard on this effort.

I think it can best be described as a skillful melding of hardcore and black metal with a bit of groove thrown in for good measure. The whole thing is capped off with an overdriven, at times hauntingly sorrowful lead vocal that rides the fine line between black metal wails and death metal growls.

There are lots of meaty riffs into which to sink your teeth in these mostly mid-tempo tunes. Moreover, I think the songs also benefit greatly from the gritty, raw production that is perfectly suited as the tapestry to hold the whole thing together. All in all I think CZAR has put together a very solid disc with lots of memorable moments that are sure to satisfy even the most discriminate metal fan.
