Album Review
Black Dogs – “Grief”
The Hell, TRC, Demoraliser, and The Catharsis – it seems like there is a whole wave of metal and hardcore bands emerging from their dark, damp rehearsal rooms where they’ve been busy venting their frustrations and, in the process, creating some savage, raging sounds. Northern scumbags Black Dogs join the pack with their frustration-filled, spit soaked metallic hardcore anthems.
Clocking at just over twenty-five minutes Grief really doesn’t intend to fuck around with pleasantries as opener “Hell Hole” sees vocalist Gollo spit “get me out of this hell hole” while, further down the tracks, “Traitors” sees him howling “sick of your shit and your stinking tricks.” His harsh, ferocious vocals are all wrapped around a bloody-knuckled bar brawl of a soundtrack that mixes hardcore with metal with punk and throws it head first down a set of stairs. With little under half an hour to crush your senses, Grief simply goes for the jugular and, as the album heads into the home straight with Gollo roaring “Die alone…” on “Bitterness” and “Leeches” kicks the crap out of this final moments of this album, you’re left with the feeling that this is only the tip of the iceberg for these Northerners.
Supporting the likes of Hatebreed, Terror, and Stray From The Path, Black Dogs have honed their road skills with some of the finest bands so it comes as no surprise that Grief sounds tight as hell. On the other hand, a lifetime of living in some of the hardest parts of the UK has clearly put this quartet on the edge of their sanity.
