I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Denver thrash band Havok. Lead guitarist and vocalist Reece Scruggs talked with me about his favorite amp that he uses while on tour. Reece will be getting good use out of his guitar and EVH 5150III amp while Havok is out on tour through the United States in parts of September and October. The band’s third record, Unnatural Selection, was released this past June and is their best-selling release to date.

What one piece of equipment do you use to obtain your signature sound?
Reece: My EVH 5150III head.

What about it makes it so important to you?
Reece: It fills in the gaps and holes other amps always have. That’s my way of explaining what the EVH does for me. It’s a consistent tone all the way through.

What are the major pros and cons?
Reece: All pros, no cons.

How long have you used this piece of equipment and would you ever change it?
Reece: I’ve had it for about a year, just shy under a year. I use it in a standard sense. I use the blue channel for rhythms and the red as a lead boost. All aided by my MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive. I love the combo of the head sound and that overdrive, best tone on the planet.

What initially attracted you to using this particular piece of gear?
Reece: I had always used Peavey 5150’s. My dad bought me an original 5150 when I was 12 and I’ll never part with it. When EVH hit me up and said they we’re interested in hooking me up, I was on board 100%. No brainer.

Any final thoughts or comments on the gear?
Reece: I love what I use now and I’ll rep Charvel, EVH, EMG, Ernie Ball every chance I get because they believe in me enough to hook me up!
