Album Review
Clutch – “Earth Rocker”
I know it doesn’t need repeating, but I’ll say it anyway… Maryland stoners Clutch are cooler than you’ll ever be! They swagger around like they own the entire fucking planet and, you know what, they pretty much damn do. If you don’t agree with this by the time they’ve stomped through the title track of this album then you certainly will by the time frontman Neil Fallon howls “step on it” halfway through “Crucial Velocity”.

Earth Rocker is an album that doesn’t even need to try that hard. On it Clutch sound like a band that are jamming at the dirtiest, sleaziest party you could imagine. Fallow drawls “every time you open up your mouth, a load of horse shit comes flying right back out” during “Mr. Freedom” and the bar has well and truly been set putting Earth Rocker on a level that mere mortals like you and me could only dream of.
Memorable from the off, every note played is done with the sort of southern rock swagger that gets your head nodding the minute the first riff kicks in. Oh and that guitar sound – it’s so sweet that you can’t help but smile as they hypnotize you with its groove-laden stomp. Take “Unto The Breach” as a prime example – a thumping, hard-rockin’ behemoth of a song full of fist-stompin’ energy and greased-up guitars. Make no mistake, this is a dirty, greasy, beast of record full of infectious choruses and simple but unforgettable riffs which will quickly have you fall under its spell.
Anyone who has seen Clutch live will testify that watching the band hold the attention of an entire room is something quite special, so you know that the drawling, hulking, sexually-charged groove of “Cyborg Bette” cannot fail to turn even the most hardened, hairiest, toughest of rockers into a gyrating, grinding idiot. Don’t try and fight it either because to try and fight the hypnotic groove of this record is a fruitless task – you will lose.
