Despite the fact that Evocation have been around for some time, I have to admit that Illusions of Grandeur is my first proper exposure to the band. I knew that they were a 90s Swedish death metal group that split up and then reunited in 2005, but other than that, I never bothered to check them out (even though I’m a sucker for melodic Swedish death metal).

Since I love Swedish death metal, is it really any surprise that I absolutely love Illusions of Grandeur? Probably not, as the band takes all of the conventions of melodic death metal and give fans of the genre exactly what they want: hooky choruses, catchy guitar riffs and an overall good time. Yeah it’s not original, but really who cares when you have songs that are this hooky? For instance, the track “Metus Odium” is just so damned catchy that I dare you to try and turn the music off for even a second before it’s over!

Fans of early In Flames and Amon Amarth in particular, will love this album and find plenty here to sink their teeth into. A solid release and highly recommended for fans of melodic death metal.
