Stellar Descent – “Accretion”

Accretion is a surprisingly moving, cassette-only release by one man black metal band Stellar Descent. The reason I say surprising is that the album consists solely of the title track which runs at over 40 minutes in length. “Accretion” however, instead of being a long and boring exercise in monotony, lulls the listener into a state that is both peaceful and yet full of longing. For what though, I’m not incredibly sure.

What I do know is that the music is extremely emotive while still maintaining a definite black metal aesthetic and vibe. The cover and j card of the album have pictures of beautiful mountains and lakes which overall, paint a calm image quite similar to the overall vibe of the album. The production is grainy and unpolished, like most black metal. However, if the sound was any more polished, the album would most likely lose a lot of its ambiance.

While by no means a perfect album, Accretion is certainly a solid listen and something that fans of black metal should seek out. The album is currently out on cassette only through Eternal Warfare.
