Psycroptic – “The Inherited Repression” [Album Review]

I am a bit late in getting into Psycroptic – after all the Tasmanian band has been around since 1999 and putting out albums since 2001’s The Isle of Disenchantment. On a whim, I recently decided to check out their discography on Rdio and was blown away. The band’s brand of tech-death is not as noodly and complex as the average tech-death outfit. As a result, non-musician’s (like me) can easily get into the music and enjoy it as much as those who are interested in the complexity of the playing.

The Inherited Repression, while not much different stylistically from the band’s previous albums, is however much better from a sonic standpoint. The songs are catchier, the riffs seem heavier and the band just seems much tighter as a unit. This is not to discount their earlier albums which were all excellent in their own right, the band just seems to have finally got their groove down so to speak. As a result Psycroptic has created what is probably the best technical death metal album of the year. Songs such as album highlight “The Sleepers Have Awoken” will have you headbanging along in no time.
