Anicon – “Anicon” [EP]

Anicon are a black metal band from New York featuring Owen Rundquist and Nolan Voss. As their debut EP had been getting great reviews, I figured I would check it out and see what all of the fuss was about.

First of all, Anicon is not your standard black metal band that shrieks and squeals and tries their best to be oh so evil and scary. No, while the atmosphere of dread and horror remains in the songs, the twosome seem to be able to do this naturally, without sounding like they are putting a bunch of effort into it. Also, they seem to remember that the songs need to be actually good and not just evil-sounding to resonate with the audience; and with these tracks they shine brightly.

While the entire EP is excellent, the standout tracks are undoubtedly “The Tomb of Illusions” and the opener “A Current of Ash and White”. Vocally the band sound nothing like them, but musically the best comparison would be to Immortal. Like most independent groups the EP is available on Bandcamp for a low price – $4 in this case. Check out the hype and then buy the download!
