Gear Review: Death Angel guitarist Rob Cavestany on his Signature Series Custom “Death Angel” Jackson Guitar

Death Angel are a classic thrash metal band who have been well-respected among metalheads since the 80s. As the group is a major influence on many current metal bands, we decided to ask guitarist and founding member Rob Cavestany about the gear that he uses to get his sound; including on the band’s latest album, Relentless Retribution. Here’s what Rob had to saw about his Signature Series Custom “Death Angel” Jackson Guitar!

What piece of equipment do you use to obtain your signature sound?
Rob: My Signature Series Custom “Death Angel” Jackson Guitar(s).

What about it makes it so important to you?
Rob: I designed them with Grover Jackson in the late 80’s. He built the first prototype and gave it to me back then. The only other person to create a guitar this way was my main influence, Randy Rhoads.

What are the major pros and cons?
Rob: Pros: sounds killer, feels and plays solid and smooth, looks wicked and sexy as hell. Cons: for me? None! Well, it’s not the lightest guitar to jump around with, but I like it that way! It’s design is not for the faint of heart… custom shop order only – maybe a bit pricey for some.

How long have you used this piece of equipment and would you ever change it?
Rob: I used the prototype from 1989 until just a few years ago. Jackson built me 3 more since then. The latest one which I just got a couple of months ago (just in time for the last leg of our tour with Anthrax and Testament) has become my favorite. It’s black and white with teardrop shaped yin yang symbols for fretboard inlays. It’s also a bit thinner and lighter than the others… Stealth with deeper bevels! I love it, no change in sight.

Any final thoughts or comments on the gear?
Rob: As you can tell I’m a big fan. All my Jackson guitars are killer. The custom shop in SoCal has always provided me with top quality instruments that have lasted through the test of time and thrash metal shows across the globe. Can’t wait to use my new “Yin Yang Dragon” on the next Death Angel album!
