Michael Toney – “Tales From The Stage Volume 1” [Book Review]

As the cover clearly indicates, in this book: “rock n’ rollers share their tales of life in and out of the hard rock/heavy metal movement.” As one might gather from the title this is a book that takes you behind the scenes and into the personal lives of some of your favorite hard rock and heavy metal musicians. I’m a sucker for this kind of book because I absolutely love getting to know the person behind the persona and I feel “Tales From The Stage” accomplishes this quite well.

The whole book is set up in a question and answer type format and it reads quickly and easily. The artists represented are quite varied wtih chapters devoted to Oz Fox, Ron Keel, Chris Holmes, Steve “Lips” Kudlow and many more. I particularly enjoyed the chapters with Bruce Kulick and Tim “The Ripper” Owens; they are two of my favorite musicians and I really enjoyed getting to know them a bit better by reading their interesting and candid answers.

If like me, you enjoy Q&A type, behind the scenes books, then this one will be right up your alley. Some of the questions are a bit generic, but there are some provocative, probing questions as well that elicit raw, unedited and uninhibited responses. Overall I think this is a pretty good read.
