The Black String Theory – “The Black String Theory” [EP]

The Black String Theory’s 4-track, self-titled EP completely caught me off guard. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I know for sure it wasn’t a band that sounds just like Radiohead or Muse. I understand that imitation can be the greatest form of flattery, and perhaps that was the goal here, but the problem for me is that we already have those two bands and by tailoring their sound this way The Black String Theory just end up sounding like lesser imitations of great classic acts.

For me the EP, while not terrible, is not very original either. Thankfully this changed with the release of their 2011 full-length disc, Remission. While they still wear their influences on their sleeve, they also bring enough to the table to make it their own thereby offering what I think is a much more mature record. Skip this EP and grab the full disc.
