Album Review
Animal Faces – “Anomie”
Animal Faces’ newest release Anomie is a completely mind-blowing piece of post-hardcore music. This Toronto based band has managed to top their previous release Analytical Dreaming in every way. Anomie expands on the sound the band forged with the previous record with excellent use of dynamics and flawless time signature changes.
Anomie gives you an intensity that leaves you gasping for air at some points with songs like “Can’t See Why,” “Sleep Tightly” and the title track “Anomie”. However, it also has it’s quieter and more heartfelt moments like on “The Shape of Landscapes.” Ryan Naray’s control over his guitar tone is astounding and producer Collin Young did an excellent job capturing the band’s sound. Aaron Morrice’s drumming moves through time signature changes smoothly and with ease, plus he uses some incredibly creative fills. Lastly, Nilsson Gonsalves’ bass gives each song the lower end it needs and compliments everything beautifully.
Ryan Naray’s vocals are perfect, never being to over the top and never coming off as too weak or out of place. The lyric’s cover a variety of deeper issues and thoughts and can be left open to interpretation in many cases. This gives Anomie a more personal and relatable touch which creates a unique experience for each listener. The digital version of Anomie is available for sale on the band’s Bandcamp where it can be streamed for free. The physical release is taking place on June 13th at local DIY venue The Soybomb.
