The Dandy Warhols – ‘This Machine’ [Album Review]
‘This Machine’ is a decent disc from a band that has definitely carved out a unique niche. It’s artsy, a bit out of the box, and worth hearing.
Though I know they’ve been around for a while and have quite the cult following, I’m new to The Dandy Warhols camp and honestly had no idea what to expect. With such an intriguing name, I must say I was more than anxious to dig into this new release and see what the group was all about. In my mind, the band name sort of lends itself to the indie genre, and I believe I wasn’t far off; the overall sound is a sort of an indie/grunge hybrid.
The first time listening through This Machine, I found myself anticipating what was next to come. There are many dimensions working in these songs, and I found it difficult to take them all in. The next few times, I listened through, from start to finish, trying to appreciate all of the songs’ different little nuances. The instrumental and vocal harmonies are fantastic, but the thing that really sucked me in and kept my attention was the driving beat and groove, both anchored by a terrifically fuzzy bass; it’s dirty, it’s fuzzy, and I absolutely love it!
There’s an infectious groove running through this album as a whole that just really makes it an enjoyable listen. At the end of the day, I think This Machine is a decent disc from a band that has definitely carved out a unique niche. It’s artsy, it’s bit out of the box, and it’s well worth checking out.
