Y La Bamba – “Squawk” [Free Download]
Released on February 28th via Tender Loving Empire, Court The Storm is the latest offering from Portland, Oregon’s masters of acoustic/indie folk, Y La Bamba. Riding high on the waves of success from their 2010 release, Lupon (of which NPR, Bust, Filter and The Fader all had shining things to say), Y La Bamba managed to recruit famed Grammy-winning producer Steve Berlin to oversee production of their sophomore full-length affair.
The Skinny: Released on February 28th via Tender Loving Empire, Court The Storm is the latest offering from Portland, Oregon’s masters of acoustic/indie folk, Y La Bamba. Riding high on the waves of success from their 2010 release, Lupon (of which NPR, Bust, Filter and The Fader all had shining things to say), Y La Bamba managed to recruit famed Grammy-winning producer Steve Berlin to oversee production of their sophomore full-length affair.
Ecstatic to work with Berlin, Y La Bamba’s desire to infuse their folk with some “mariachi flavour” was realized in working with the Los Lobos member. Peppered with Spanish influences (four of the eleven songs are sung in Spanish), Court The Storm allows front woman, Luzelena Mendoza to not only shine vocally, but also to fully embrace her Mexican heritage and personal life experiences by injecting them into the songs. Truly a gem of a poppy album, you should do yourself a favour and get to know Y La Bamba. So you might as well snag this free download of “Squawk”.
