Hypno5e – “Acid Mist Tomorrow” [Album Review]

Acid Mist Tomorrow is the sophomore release from French metal act Hypno5e; a band that has carved out a certain niche for themselves for being experimental metal pioneers. This new CD is once again a testament to that mission and it contains an unorthodox mixture of extreme experimental music.

Let me first say that these guys are really good musicians, the sheer technicality of these tracks is phenomenal and I’m sure is the reason many people listen to these guys to begin with. With all that being said, Acid Mist Tomorrow is “pretty far out there” and I would consider it the very definition of avant-garde. There is no real good way to describe what this CD sounds like other than a melding of fantastic playing with dissonant passages, ethereal moments and an overall concerted effort to create music outside the conventional norms. For the most part I think it works well, especially in the song, “Six Fingers In One Hand She holds the dawn Part II,” but there are moments where it seems to me that the songs become weighted down and mired in an over-the-top avant-garde sensibility; a good example of which can be found in the tune, “Brume Unique Obscurité Part II,” which I found a bit difficult to muscle through.

On a positive note, this CD is well produced and is packaged with some very interesting and well-designed artwork. If you’re looking for something outside of the box and or outside of your comfort zone, Acid Mist Tomorrow is for you.
