Blink 182 – “After Midnight” [Song Review]

It looks as though Blink 182 still have that magic touch of success that made the band so massive during the early 2000s. Their comeback record Neighbourhoods has been a hit with fans and critics since its release at the end of September and really, it kind of feels like the band never went away for those few years in the mid-2000s. The second single off of Neighbourhoods, after the huge success of “Up All Night”, is “After Midnight.”

“After Midnight” is a lot more mid-tempo and even more commercially accessible than “Up All Night.” It’s not quite a ballad, but it’s not far off as Tom Delonge’s lyrics have that familiar lovesick, tortured youth theme to them. Again Delonge and bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus share the singing responsibilities which seems to have worked into a winning formula for the group. From a pop/rock song writing perspective, the song is written exactly according to that tried, tested and true formula which makes the song accessible to both pop and rock/punk fans. For what it is, “After Midnight” is a decent tune, though it would be interesting to hear something a little more “out there” for a change from Blink 182.
