Vocalist for the Swedish band Blindside, Christian Lindskog, recently sat down with me to discuss the band’s newest release, With Shivering Hearts We Wait. After an extended self-imposed hiatus to focus on their personal and family lives, the band is back and in full-effect. With Shivering Hearts We Wait is a terrific comeback and an even better record that fans of the band will absolutely dig. Here’s what Lindskog had to say about the band, their extended hiatus and their brand new disc.

Now that your new disc, With Shivering Hearts We Wait is complete, how do you feel about it and are you satisfied with the outcome?
Christian: Oh yes I am very satisfied with it. I feel really happy about it, it has been a long process, but it is finally here and I am very happy.

What was the writing process like for the record? Did you guys all write together?
Christin: Generally we write together. I think that is one of the main things that keeps things interesting for all of us; that we all contribute to the music. It really is a great process, but it can be different for each song as well. If someone has a lyric, a concept or a riff or something like that we can just add to it so it is different all the time, but we all do contribute to the process.

How long did the record take to make?
Christian: It took a while. We kind of took a break for while so we could concentrate on our families so the writing process was really slow during that time. But once we got started writing and got focused it went pretty quickly toward the end of it.

Did you guys have a lot of songs written that eventually had to be narrowed down for the record?
Christian: Yeah I think we had about 35 songs or more. We have a lot of songs that we still feel real good about that we might put out sometime in the future.

Are there any tracks on the disc that are personal favorites or that have good stories behind them?
Christian: They all have their own kind of stories and all of the lyrics are very personally. The one I feel most strongly about is, “There Must Be Something In The Wind.” Just because of the way it came about. It was really special for me as I was sitting near the ocean and I saw big waves start rolling in and a big storm start to form over the water and somehow it moved me. I started humming this melody that has stuck with me for a long time. I even started humming it to my kids when they went to sleep and then all of a sudden it turned into this song; so it is a special song to me.

What is the meaning behind the title of the record?
Christian: We have been waiting a long time for this record. Also once you step away from the business it is kind of scary. Stepping out of that world and living a different life with your family. We needed to do that, but it was kind of scary to me. Now it is almost scary to step back into it. So it is almost like a big monster coming toward you. You are really excited, but at times it we don’t know what it is going to mean for all of us. It could mean a lot or it could be nothing.

You guys have been at this for a long time. Did you ever imagine you would be releasing records after so many years?
Christian: I don’t know. When we started this band we never thought it would go this far. Of course like every other band we had our hopes, but if we could fast forward time we would be amazed at how we are still friends who are making music together.

What kind of touring plans do you have in support of the record?
Christian: We are going out in September to do a United States tour which we will be headlining. We are excited about it and it feels good to get back to the States again, during the summer we will be playing a lot of the European festivals over here.

How does it feel to be back in the saddle again after an extended break?
Christian: It feels amazing actually. The shows we have done have gotten a great response and we are just happy to be back. I think when you tour a lot, and we toured constantly, you lose perspective to see what you have. Once you step away from it for a while and go back to it you kind of have more gratitude. We are really super excited. We are all still friends. I walk up onstage sometimes and I think these are my high school friends and we are still playing together it is such a great thing.

It is nice to see the fans have not gone away either?
Christian: Yeah we didn’t know if there would be any fans left because we had been away for so long. But once we started getting back into the response has been huge so it has been great.
