Twisted Sister – “Double Live: Northstage 82 & Ny Steel 01” [DVD Review]
To date, Double Live is by far my favorite DVD release from Eagle Rock Entertainment. As a huge Twisted Sister fan I found this package to be utterly fantastic. It’s a two disc set featuring two performances filmed 19 years apart. It also includes interviews with the band discussing their reunion as well as the personal impact the events of 9/11 had on the members. I’ve seen the band live countless times and while nothing can replace attending a concert itself, this DVD comes damn close at capturing the passion and intensity of a Twisted Sister show.
The first DVD was filmed in 1982 just prior to the band becoming one of the biggest names in the business. Captured live at the North Stage Theatre in full makeup, Dee Snider and the boys tear it up. The energy the band puts into their live show is quite unreal and unless you’ve seen them for yourself it might be hard to understand. Snider is often imitated, but never with any amount of success; he’s truly a one of kind rock and roll entertainer. This DVD commands your full attention. I’ve watched it numerous times in the past few days and while I feel every song stands on its own, this really must be watched from beginning to end to be fully appreciated.
The second DVD was filmed in 2001 when the band reunited for the New York Steele show in NYC. Once again the energy and stage presence is off the chain, even after a long hiatus they still take to the stage and tear it up. Song selection on this DVD is a bit different and contains all of the big hits from their breakthrough album Stay Hungry as well as a few older ones from back in the day.
If I was stranded on a deserted island and was only allowed to take one DVD with me, this would be the one. I can watch this over and over again. I cut my rock n roll teeth on these guys and they’ve remained one of my favorite bands throughout my adult life. I highly recommend this DVD package to fans of the band or really anyone looking to familiarize themselves with what I feel is one of the most influential rock n roll bands of all time.
