Album Review
Messengers – “Anthems”
There have been many memorable moments in the metal world this year. At least 4 or 5 times so far, I’ve reviewed a disc and thought that it would be my pick for album of the year. Then I received Anthems by the Texas thrash metal act Messengers. It is now the middle of November and I believe that this might very well be the best record I have heard this year.
From the very first note Messengers brings the thrash like no other, laying down track after blistering track of powerful, heavy, thrashing riffs, and big gang vocals. This is good old school thrash reminiscent of the masters and originators of this genre. I would compare them to the likes of Pantera, Slayer and the like. The first tune sets the bar so high I didn’t think they would be able follow all the way through, but man was I wrong.
Favorite songs include the opener “Shipwrecked” and “Domicile,” both of which are completely unbelievable tunes that rock so hard I almost broke a sweat. I’d heard about these guys a while back and though I was anticipating this record, I was not expecting it to be this good; I absolutely love the entire album.
If you are a fan of thrash and you do not already own this disc, stop what you are doing, run right out and purchase it. It is that good and I believe is must-have for your collection. [ END ]
