I have been a huge Rush fan since the mid-70’s and I found this DVD to be incredibly entertaining and immensely informative. As is the case with the other videos in this series, there are a ton of vintage live performances and interviews that any true Rush fan will absolutely dig. There also are a ton of interviews with the people involved in the making of theses albums; interviews with roadies, sound techs, producers and record executives.
I especially enjoyed learning about the theme behind 2112. Honestly I never gave the theme or the lyrics much thought, I was just so blown away by the collective musicianship of the band that I never could get beyond that. Now years later I found the explanation of themes and even more specifically the songs themselves to be quite riveting. I always find it cool when I learn about the back story behind songs especially if the songs have been such a large part of my life. I grew up listening to both of these records, so much so that I have had to replace my copy of Moving Pictures on more than one occasion.
The bonus material that is included on the disc is also quite excellent. The chapter entitled, “This Is Not A Drum Solo (Neil Warms Up),” is literally, freaking mind blowing. I am not a drummer, but I know enough to appreciate what Peart can do and what he does in this video is phenomenal. It has long been known that Peart is one of the best in the business and after watching him play in this DVD I can understand why. He is that good!
I would highly recommend this DVD whether you are a long time fan of the band or new to the Rush camp. This is a terrific look inside the world of one of the greatest bands of all time and into two of the most influential albums of all-time. Check this one out. You won’t regret it.
