Motion City Soundtrack – “A Life Less Ordinary (Need a Little Help)” [Song Review]

In early January of 2010 Motion City Soundtrack, in my opinion one of the most unique pop/rock bands around, released their new album My Dinosaur Life. This record differs from those previous in that it includes a fresh, pop/rock sound that the band had yet to achieve. That said, If one were to introduce themselves to MCST for the first time by way of this album, I would highly recommend “A Life Less Ordinary (Need a Little Help)” as a first listen.

The song immediately begins with a roping rhythmic riff which climbs and falls with the song’s various emotions. Similarly, the lyrics flow perfectly with the song’s rhythm; it’s like a chant for anyone going through a tough time where they just wants to throw their hands up in frustration. With some back and forth word play, the verse reflects negativity (wanting to give up, feeling it is you against the world, etc), while the chorus chimes in with some positivity (thinking one can overcome, though he/she may need a little help).

Towards the end the song slows a bit, conveying with it the feeling of the hesitation we often get when faced with life or a large decision. In the end we as humans figure things out and with or without a little help, we move on. Overall, “A Life Less Ordinary (Need a Little Help)” was well crafted with it’s generally catchy and upbeat tone, as well as an incredibly strong, relatable message.  [ END ]
