Album Review
Diesto – “High As The Sun”
Hailing from Portland, Oregon the indie/noise/experimental metal band Diesto is set to release their latest CD High As The Sun on November 1st. While this disc is heavy, distorted and experimental, it also has a doom metal feel to it at the same time. The songs are quite long (a few of them top out at over ten minutes long) but they managed to keep my interest, for the most part, all the way through.
I did find myself however, getting a little bit restless about 5 minutes through the 2nd track “All Eyes Upon You.” Over all though, there is a decent amount of variety in the tunes to sustain them for the duration and the more than prevalent psychedelic/jam aspect to the songs leaves you unaware of what is hiding around the next measure or beat.
Dissonance and down tuned guitars do reign supreme on this disc. Most of the record is driven by a super distorted bass line that reminded me quite a bit of early Black Sabbath, (very heavy and very distorted) and the vocals are almost buried in the mix making them pretty much unintelligible.
All this said, I sort of dig this disc, mainly for the fact that it is a bit different from everything else going on in metal right now. While I am not sure I will listen to High As The Sun on a regular basis, I could definitely foresee me revisiting it on occasion. If you truly want to hear something out of the ordinary or even a bit avant garde then give this one a shot. High As The Sun is a decent listen and not a bad collection overall. [ END ]
