Balance and Composure/Tigers Jaw – “Self-Titled” [Split] [Album Review]

Splits are always interesting in the music industry. Occasionally, they come off as so obviously contrived by the record label that it’s sad, but for every profit pulling product there is an equal and opposite work out there; see the new split by Balance and Composure and Tigers Jaw as a good example. This is what a split should always be; complimentary style, tight musicianship and two halves that make a stronger whole.

Simply titled Balance and Composure/Tigers Jaw this record remains tight and propelling throughout its brief half hour run time. Balance kicks off with their piece de resistance “Kaleidoscope” – easily their best track, perhaps the best on the album – and follows with three more songs that showcase promising talent and punk/emo sensibilities. They bash you about with their pummeling attacks, and occasionally suggest some tenderness as they break off into moody guitar-work.

Opposite Balance, and finishing off the split, is Tigers Jaw, a five-piece from Scranton, PA, who are relative newcomers, but have a more substantial catalogue than Balance and Composure. Their songs, on this split and in general, aren’t as abrasive as Balance’s work but they are great songs all the same. The mood is relaxed and the lyrics are basic but there is a tangent of honesty that shines through the four tracks. Tigers Jaw’s final effort on the disc, “Dent”, is the perfect finisher and it sits opposite opener “Kaleidoscope” in perfect compliment.

These two Pennsylvanian groups pull together eight songs that show talent, dedication, and promise. Tigers Jaw’s final refrain on the album screams, “You swore that everything was fine”, and although that can seem slightly cynical, this split still manages to leave a good impression. Eight songs, 30 minutes, two bands, and a hell of a good time; it’s Balance and Composure/Tigers Jaw.  [ END ]
