Rob Vannice the vocalist and guitarist of the Chicago based Punk band JuiceheaD spoke with me recently about the band’s latest offering, Rotting From The Inside. The group is doing something a little bit different this time and they are releasing this on limited edition 7″ colored vinyl. There are only two songs on this release but the band is currently preparing to drop a full length effort sometime in September. Here is what Rob had to say about the band, the EP, Rotting From The Inside and the forthcoming full-length How To Sail A Sinking Ship.

Your new release, a 7 inch single called Rotting From The Inside, is being released on limited edition colored vinyl. What was the reason behind releasing this on vinyl?
Rob: We released the Rotting From The Inside 7″ in conjunction with Record Store Day. We all grew up shopping at independent music stores, which sadly there are so few of today and we saw this as a way to release a very special limited edition record as a thank you to the stores that we really love and appreciate. We were really excited to be a part of Record Store Day 2010 and hope to be a part of this event in the future. Plus everything sounds better on Vinyl.

When can we expect the full CD release of How To Sail A Sinking Ship?
Rob: As it stands we are looking at a Fall 2010 release for How To Sail A Sinking Ship.

Do you plan to release How To Sail A Sinking Ship on vinyl as well?
Rob: Yes, we have plans to release more JuiceheaD music on vinyl.

What can fans expect when they pick up a copy of Rotting From The Inside?
Rob: Fans can expect everything I appreciate out of a well thought out project. Great artwork by Joe King, smooth and warm production thanks to John Cafiero, and two new songs that hit with the strength and urgency our fans have come to know us for. The colored vinyl is also very cool as no two records are the same so your copy really will be one of a kind!

How quick are you in the studio? Can you usually knock things out in a couple takes?
Rob: As with anything JuiceheaD does, we come prepared. We recorded twenty some songs instrumentally in one week. We were fortunate to be able to record at Bennett Studios, (owned by the man himself, Tony Bennett), which provided a very professional and comfortable atmosphere and working with John Cafiero as producer was an incredible experience. All the pieces were there to make it a fun and productive ride. I’ve heard that nerves can play against artists while recording and we weren’t completely immune to nervousness, but having a strong supportive team behind you makes all the difference in the world and the album sounds incredible as a result.

Rotting From The Inside comes to us by way of Misfits Records. Are you happy with the label?
Rob: I think that it’s hard enough for bands to find labels and representation to begin with, let alone a record label that actually works for its artists. Misfits Records has given JuiceheaD the opportunity to be ourselves and do what we love with nothing but support and encouragement. To say we are happy with Misfits Records would be a gross understatement. We are very proud to be a part of a label that has taken us in and made us feel at home and we can’t thank them enough for it.

Are there any contemporary or classic bands that you guys admire?
Rob: In my book The Beatles are the cat’s pajamas. Always have been and always will be. They basically taught me everything I believe in as a songwriter, which is to say that nothing is out of bounds and evolution is crucial. Speaking of evolution, Mike Patton is another example of an artist pushing the boundaries who I admire greatly. Now, if you want to go for raw energy, fun and honesty then there is none greater than Gogol Bordello. And the list goes on…

What is the toughest lesson you ever learned in the studio and on the stage?
Rob: There really aren’t any hard lessons, only lessons that go with anything in life; it’s simply how you look at it. It’s not always going to be a cakewalk and I guess the point I really want to drill home to any aspiring musician is that it really is a labor of love with the emphasis on labor. Work hard, and when you are done working hard work harder.

How much roadwork do you expect to be doing this 2010?
Rob: Once we finish up this summer tour with Agent Orange and D.I. we will be planning a lot more dates in conjunction with the album release. Also look for us in our hometown of Chicago if you happen to be passing through or are a resident yourself.

Any closing words?
Rob: Keep an eye out for JuiceheaD on the road this Summer and Fall 2010, and How To Sail A Sinking Ship coming your way soon from Misfits Records.  [ END ]
