Spark Is A Diamond – “Try This On For Size”

Calling all hardcore kids who want to dance! I’m not talking about throwing down but bopping your body like girls at clubs. Spark Is A Diamond has written great music to groove to. These songs can be found on their albums Keep Your Eyes Off The Prize EP and Try This On For Size. If a metal gym ever opened up, these releases would be perfect for exercising to.
Coming from dribbles of Philadelphia bands Fall River and Morning For The Masses came Spark Is A Diamond. The trio consists of Alison Bellavance, Matt Hall and Joe Crawford who blend their past hardcore styles and dance beats, creating what is their first full length Try This On For Size.
Matt Hall’s guitar work on this album are upbeat dance riffs. Matt also contributes backing vocals to Alison Bellavance. The lead shouting of Alison cloaks the dance riffs and makes them sound heavier then they really are. She brings a hardcore feel to every song. Next is Joe Crawford who brings in the drums. He has a unique playing style where he will play an upbeat drum line and then transfer over to complicated fills and some breakdowns. He alternates his drumming within songs to help give parts more character. And last is… oh wait their is no bass in Spark Is A Diamond. This is rare for a rock band.
If you picked up a copy of Try This On For Size you will notice a certain theme throughout all the art. This would be diamond shaped imagery. This was done by Dann Miller of Stomach Designs (www.myspace.com/stomachdesigns). Also their is a relapse of pink, blue and white colours through this release. It may look and feel feminine but trust me, even guys are okay to be caught holding this release. Under the diamonds are some powerful tunes.
Since it is very different when compared to other records, Try This On For Size is a gem for all hardcore fans. This release is for fans of Fall River, Morning For The Masses, I Hate Sally and Hunter. Now that you’re done reading, pick up this CD and dance the night away. [ END ]
