Kings of Leon: “Kings of Alternative Rock”
This band really requires no introduction with how much mainstream media coverage they have received over the last year and a half. They’re an alternative rock band from Tennessee made up of three brothers and a cousin all with the same last name and all in their mid-20s.
The Skinny: This band really requires no introduction given how much mainstream media coverage they have received over the last year and a half. They’re an alternative rock band from Tennessee made up of three brothers and a cousin all with the same last name and all in their mid-20s. The group plays a cool mix of bluesy, southern flavoured rock with a tinge of ‘90s alternative and grunge influence. Over the years the group’s sound has changed to include more alternative and indie rock elements, different from their early days when the group sounded more like a southern rock and blues act.
Even though Kings of Leon has been together now for over ten years, they didn’t begin to really become hugely popular in North America until after the release of their latest album, 2008’s Only By The Night. This was preceded by a few years of fairly solid success in the United Kingdom where the band first made it big. Since its release, Only By The Night has sold over five million copies in the entire world, a staggering feat considering the current state of the record industry.
And while the band has been touring continuously and extensively over the last year and a half, they still have some tour dates lined up for this summer, including a show at Hyde Park in London and the V Festival in August. Lately there have been some hints regarding a new album in the works. At the end of February drummer Nathan Followill said on his Twitter page that the band was “getting in shape” to record the group’s fifth record. Please do yourself a favour and check them out (if you haven’t already) and don’t be turned off by all the mainstream attention they’ve received, they are that good.
