The Skinny: Jungle Rot, diseased skin tissue, death metal rock band or both? If you answered both then give yourself a pat on the back. Jungle Rot is a four piece American death metal band hailing from Kenosha, Wisconsin that has been making ears bleed now for over a decade and a half. After releasing a couple of demos, the group released its debut record Skin the Living in 1996. Slowly but surely, the band toured extensively and began to form quite a strong fan base largely thanks to its intense live performances. Jungle Rot’s hard work resulted in a record deal with Pulverizer Records which resulted in the nearly immediate release of its sophomore CD Slaughter the Weak which solidified the band as one of metal’s biggest underground acts.

Over the last decade, Jungle Rot has been perhaps one of the hardest working groups in death metal and hardcore. They have played shows at a nearly constant pace, seen several group members come and go and also have managed to release five albums. It’s widely agreed that their best effort is most likely 2004’s Fueled By Hate which saw the band go on its very first European tour in 2005 in support. This was followed by some more line-up changes, another new record in 2006 War Zone, and then signing a new and lucrative record deal with Australia’s Napalm Records in late 2008.

The band’s first release with Napalm came this past summer with What Horrors Await. The album has been described as classic Jungle Rot with crushing guitars, killer double bass grooves and brutally deep growls from vocalist Dave Matrise. In terms of lyrical content, Matrise has been given credit for coming up with some of the best war, torture and death related lyrical themes of the band’s career. And although none have yet been publicly announced, expect to see Jungle Rot back out on the road this coming summer. If you’re into thrash and no nonsense death metal then check this band out.
