Cypress Hill – “Rise Up” [Song Review]
Who’s one of the greatest hip hop groups ever? Cypress Hill really requires no introduction since everyone and their grandmother recognizes the phrase “insane in the membrane.” It’s hard to believe but Cypress Hill has been together now for over twenty years and has sold nearly twenty million records in that time.
What’s maybe even harder to believe is that the group hasn’t released an album in six years. That’s all going to change come April 20th (get it? The 4/20? Haha) when B-Real and company release their eighth studio album Rise Up. The second single, the title track, was recently released to radio and if it’s any indication, this is definitely going to be some “phunky Cypress Hill shit.”
“Rise Up” is in one way classic Cypress Hill and in another way something new. It features some very catchy back and forth verses between B-Real and Sen Dog with some slick riffs in the background from none other than Rage’s Tom Morello. Morello’s guitar style fits right in with the tempo and flavour of the song and he does well not to overshadow B and Sen with his customary crazy guitar sounds.
Overall, “Rise Up” is a pretty kick ass track and it helps prove that CH isn’t anywhere near over the hill. There’s something not only exciting but comforting about seeing Cypress Hill back in action releasing music and touring, exactly what they should be doing. [ END ]
