Billy Idol – “In Super Overdrive Live” [DVD Review]

I do not believe there has been anyone more immediately recognizable on the pop/punk rock scene than Billy Idol. His enigmatic persona and instantly familiar vocal delivery ruled the airwaves during the Eighties and early Nineties spawning numerous radio and video hits. I pretty much grew up listening to him and it was with great pleasure that I sat back, cracked a beer and watched this live DVD.

Recorded in live in front of a sold out crowd at the Congress Theatre in Chicago, Idol accompanied by original guitarist and serious shredder himself, Steve Stevens put on one hell of a show.

All of the hits one would expect are included on this DVD. “Dancing With Myself,” “Rebel Yell” and “White Wedding” are all performed to perfection and actually seem to be even better in the live setting, possibly benefiting from the unbelievable guitar prowess of Stevens. Idol who is in top form and does not look much different than he did two decades ago puts everything he has into the performance; constantly moving, interacting and entertaining the crowd.

I have reviewed quite a few live DVDs in the past year or so and I can honestly say this is one of the best ones to cross my desk. The videography, sound quality and packaging are top notch. Judging by the crowd’s reaction it appears that all in attendance had a good time. I only wish I had been one of those in attendance to enjoy it as well.

At the end of the day, I feel that this DVD is worth checking out. It is a killer performance from a true musical legend. Even though some of these songs are over twenty years old, they still seem as fresh and vibrant as ever, they are timeless Rock and Roll classics that seem to be rejuvenated in the live setting.
