Heaven & Hell
The Devil You Know (04.28.2009)
The Masters of Metal are back and better than ever. Toni Iommi, Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice are legendary in the metal world and rightly so. The bands newest release, The Devil You Know, is a masterpiece of molten metal that affirms why they have had such longevity in the music business. As a long time fan of Dio and what I would describe as a rabid fan of Black Sabbath, I found myself utterly enthralled and engrossed in this disc from the very first note. The buzz on this was big and I had been highly anticipating it for a while and let me tell you, it was well worth the wait; I was not disappointed in the least.
“Bible Black,” is absolutely my favorite track on the disc because it reminds me of older, classic Dio. It starts off with a great melodic/acoustic intro that quickly morphs into the pounding trademark Sabbath sound that has been beloved by scores of fans for the past three decades. Other highlights worth mentioning are “Eating Cannibals” and the last track on the record “Breaking Into Heaven” which are absolutely extraordinary straight ahead metal tunes. The rest of the disc is classic Heaven & Hell that we have come to expect and I am hard pressed to find a tune that I do not like on this CD. Quite honestly, I love this disc start to finish.
While Heaven & Hell do not stray far from their roots, this is a solid metal disc from a band whose members were influential in defining the Metal genre. The Devil You Know should be a welcome addition to every metal heads catalog. [ END ]
