Cincinnati, Ohio’s Rose Funeral is preparing to release their Metal Blade Records debut, The Resting Sonata. Let me tell you something, this CD is a menacing masterpiece of pure destruction. This unbelievably heavy collection of tunes dishes out 42 minutes of punishing demonic mayhem and from the opening song, “Exordium The Fall Of Christ (Intro),” mass chaos soon follows. Evil, throat-ripping vocals are standard fare on this disc as are the customary guttural growls that are usually associated with the Death-Metal genre. The Resting Sonata is a mixture of unrelenting brutality but still manages to sustain a melodic sense about it. Guitarist Jesse Beisner recently spoke with me about the new record and the band in general.

The name of the band Rose Funeral is interesting to say the least and sounds as if there is a story behind it. Where did the name come from and what is the story?
Jesse: Ryan was in the shower when he was going over names and it came to him that we needed something that represented beauty and death.

Your brand new CD titled The Resting Sonata has just been released. Now that it is complete, how do you feel about it? Are you satisfied with the outcome?
Jesse: We are very satisfied with the outcome. We have been receiving an overwhelming positive response on the album. Our fans feel that they have finally received the record that they have been looking for from Rose Funeral since C.K.R!

What was the writing process like for this CD? Did you guys all write together? How long did it take?
Jesse: Well because majority of us live in different areas the writing process was a little difficult. That was right around the time of new transitions for members etc. So between touring and studio time it took us 6 months to finally get the album to the way we wanted it to sound. We experimented a lot with different tones.

Give us some insight into the record The Resting Sonata and the meaning behind its title?
Jesse: The Resting Sonata is our way of delivering an album full of death and hatred. This album is not about bashing Christianity in total it is more about painting a picture of the realties of death and destruction in our society.

What is the hardest part about being in a touring metal band and what is the biggest obstacle your band faces?
Jesse: The hardest part of touring is dealing with typical touring issues such as Van problems and dealing with the Economy going into the shitter. Hopefully things will pick up in the future.

Your lyrics are infused with heavy detail and raw emotion. What is it that normally gives you inspiration when writing lyrics and is there a theme or themes behind the writing of this record?
Jesse: Well the overall theme again is about death and destruction. We also talk a lot about Zombies. We love the shocking look on people’s faces when they read our lyrics. It is quite entertaining.

When you are on the road for a while, I am sure you see and experience many different things you might not even have known existed. Are there any stories that stand out in your mind as being exceptionally strange or odd?
Jesse: Well one time on our way to meet our manager in Virginia (DC Area) we passed by a car accident that we were literally ten feet away from and there was blood everywhere and a Decapitated head on the road. It was Sick.

How do you maintain that level of energy and exuberance on tour? You sound like you are ready to go full bore every time you play.
Jesse: Well we pride ourselves sometimes on our live show. We feel that we really bring out the intensity of the album in our live show. We hate going to shows that bands are playing and they don’t move on stage. Who wants to pay 10 bucks and just watch a band stand there and play? When we play shows we try and give the crowd their money’s worth.

By gaining a label deal at such an early point in your career it’s clear that record execs see a lot of potential in your abilities. How do you not let that sort of pressure get to you when on the road or writing new material?
Jesse: Well we feel that there is not a lot of pressure at all. The people at Metal Blade have treated us so well. And we all are on the same page as far as making this band be a successful part of the roster. We all feel more like a family than anything.

What is next for Rose Funeral?
Jesse: We are going to continue to keep touring in the states for a while to really push this album then we have a Full Canadian tour lined up in April with our great friends Cattle Decapitation and Psyopus. So come to a show and hang out with us!  [ END ]
