Xavier Rudd

Dark Shades of Blue (08.19.2008)

Xavier Rudd’s new album, Dark Shades of Blue, is a mysterious, strangely compelling collection of songs. He is known for utilizing a wide array of interesting instruments, and this album uses the yirdaki, stomp box, and udu drum.

Xavier Rudd is Australian, and his music always has an ethnic, folksy element to it. Dark Shades of Blue is no exception. Most of the songs are mid-tempo, with a few up-tempo numbers that make better use of Rudd’s expertise on the hollow bodied electric guitar. However, Rudd’s voice leaves a little to be desired. He has the kind of raspy, strident voice that is reminiscent of Bob Dylan, which is not easily accessible to all listeners. But you know, how can I fault a man who knows how to play the didgeridoo? In any case, the actual music is so compelling that the sound of his voice isn’t a concern anymore. It’s the kind of music you would expect to be in the background of a creepy science fiction movie. It’s not that it’s futuristic, it’s just that it fosters a feeling of mystery.

Xavier Rudd is an artist whose music serves a niche audience, and probably won’t be liked by a wide variety of people. But if you’re open minded and willing, Dark Shades of Blue could be a valuable addition to your music collection.  [ END ]
