Scream Hello

Everything Is Always Still Happening (09.09.2008)

Scream Hello are a quartet from New Jersey with influences ranging from The Beatles to Andrew WK to Pearl Jam. Somehow this combination leads to a indie/punk/emo sound with some hooks that even the Beatles may have been proud of. What stands out about Scream Hello is their ability to not only write catchy 3 minute rock songs but also emotional 6 – 7 minute long songs.

One problem is that some of their lyrics can seem a little strange especially with songs such as “35 Plums” however, these lyrics do add a bit of fun and youth into their sound. On the other hand, it has to be said there are some great lyrics in there and the music is written to a very high standard. While the album doesn’t have the quality to be one of those records that you come back to years ahead and think “wow I remember that album, why haven’t I listened to that for so long”, there’s no doubt this band is one of the more exciting, original punk-indie-emo bands out there.

This album has some songs that stand out more than others and with time this band could be producing songs that are of consistent high quality. If that happens there is no doubt this band will hit the big time. One thing they should avoid is their screamo type songs. There were two on this album and to me it just spoiled the flow of the album. There was also a pretty strange song with a piano intro which raged into a song for around 40 seconds and then the same piano riff as an outro. Needless things like this may be “original” or “artistic”, but really it was just a song people won’t add to their ipods.

Anyway, I would keep a watchful eye on these guys. Plenty of potential there.  [ END ]
