Various Artists – “Halloween Original Soundtrack”

Halloween is one of the most fun celebrations of the year. Dressing up as something scary and then tricking or treating… or if you’re older tricking or drinking, watching scary movies and eating candy. It’s great! I was thrilled when I opened my mailbox to find CD’s from PureGrain, and even more so when I saw the Halloween soundtrack to Rob Zombie’s new freaky flick was there, right on schedule to put some spooky celebrations.

I was expecting something along the lines of Marilyn Manson or the Monster Mash. Even Dr. Hook’s “Freaker’s Ball”, but that was not at all what I got; which turned out to be a good surprise. The music itself isn’t creepy, like someone would expect from a Halloween movie. They’re oldies, but goodies; like “Love Hurts”, “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper”, and “Tom Sawyer”. Plus there there are also some cover tunes. I know… whenever I see there is a cover song on a soundtrack or, even hear the words “cover song” I automatically thing that it’ll probably be a very bad song; but the ones on this disc are good. “Baby, I Love Your Way” by Peter Frampton is very funky and isn’t too over-zealous.

The song “The Shape Stalks Laurie” did give me the heebee-jeebees however. I was driving home early in the morning, before the sun came up, post-Halloween shenanigans, when the song came out of my car speakers. There was barely anyone else driving on the road, and hearing gave me the feeling that there was someone hiding in the backseat of my car.

Halloween, the soundtrack must reflect the bizarreness of the movie. The last Rob Zombie film I saw was weird and made me want to sleep with the lights on. It’s not so much the songs, or the tracks in between with the mini eerie conversations, but how it flows together, so when you listen to it you realize “Oh I can see why this is the soundtrack to the new Rob Zombie movie.”  [ END ]
