Johnny Cash Remixed (10.14.2008)
Who would have thought, one of the biggest all time names in Country Music, Johnny Cash, remixed by some of the biggest names in the business? This is everything you’d expect from a record produced by, none other than, Snoop Dogg himself. Thirteen Johnny Cash classics get a remake and end up taking on a whole new dimension when drum loops, scratching and a bit of programming are added to the mix.
I grew up listening to Johnny Cash with my parents and I think that on Johnny Cash Remixed, some already good songs become, dare I say, better, making you want to get up out of your seat and dance. Songs such as “Sugartime” (remixed by Kennedy), “I Walk The Line”, (remixed by ODT Muzic and Snoop Dogg), “Leave That Junk Alone” (remixed by Alabama 3) and “Country Boy”, (remixed by Sonny J) groove so hard you won’t be able to contain yourself; they are incredibly infectious, soulful and just plain fun.
Pete Rock’s version of “Folsom Blues” is a great tribute to Mr. Cash although it doesn’t ever really achieve what he is capable of, it almost sounds flat and reserved compared to some of the other remixes on the disc. The production on this CD is fantastic and through the magic of recording, it appears as if Johnny is right there in the studio standing next to Snoop, even though he has not been with us for a few years now.
I love this disc for what it is: a successful cross genre CD that is sure to see lots of airplay. There are so many great tunes on this disc that I imagine the record company will be releasing radio singles for a long time to come. You don’t have to be a fan of either Rap or Country music to enjoy Johnny Cash Remixed. It is full of enough catchy creative tunes to please just about any music fan. [ END ]
