Better Motörhead Than Dead: Live at Hammersmith (07.16.2007)
A household name for over 30 years, Grammy Winning heavy metal band Motörhead are back with a live album that will blow your fucking socks off. Recorded at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon on June 16th, 2005, Better Motörhead Than Dead is everything a Motörhead fan or fan of any kind of good old Rock and Roll will dig.
With 24 records under their belt, the band has a lot material to choose from and the 23 song set is comprised of a wide range of songs culled from over three generations of music designed for fans of all ages that have grown up listening to Motörhead. Classic old tunes such as “Ace of Spades” and “Iron Fist”, as well as my two personal favorite Motörhead tunes “Killed by Death” and “Overkill” are on here and believe it or not, these songs sound better live, if that is even possible. “Love For Sale” from the Snake Bite Love album as well as tunes from the Inferno are also included in here and round out this live disc.
I have heard quite a few live albums in my time and with the exception of possibly Kiss Alive and the Frampton live record, most of them pretty much leave a lot to be desired. Not this disc, Better Motörhead than Dead is balls out from the start and maintains that exuberance till the very end.
Packaged in a two disc set with a great insert containing candid shots of the band. Motörhead kick it off disc one with “Dr Rock” and the onslaught begins. Lemmy Kilmiester, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee hold nothing back as they tear into tune after blistering tune closing with “Dancing on Your Grave.” Disc two starts off with “R.A.M.O.N.E.S.” and “Sacrifice,” during which Mikkey Dee has a most impressive drum solo. The band eventually closes out the second disc with the aforementioned masterpieces “Ace of Spades” and “Overkill.” This CD is honestly unbelievable and I kept wishing I had been in attendance for the show; the crowd got one hell of a treat from the Gods of Rock and Roll.
