Album Review
Oh, Sleeper – “When I Am God”
As everyone knows, metalcore is a genre that’s growing at a disgusting pace. Christian metalcore—a metalcore sub-genre—has also seen a popularity increase, which has been aided by bands such as The Devil Wears Prada and As I Lay Dying. Here is another that will push Christian metalcore to even further heights: Oh, Sleeper.

Oh, Sleeper happens to be one of those bands that have an epic line-up, which consists of five guys who have previously been in other great bands. For example, some of you may remember guitarist Shane Blay from somewhere. *cough* Between The Buried And Me *cough*
Unfortunately, Oh, Sleeper isn’t as technical as Between The Buried And Me; though, Oh, Sleeper’s music is still insane. Micah Kinard has a unique vocal style that makes him sound like he’s screaming with two sets of vocal chords. Kinard and Blay, along with Ryan Conley (drums), Lucas Starr (bass), and James Erwin (guitar), will make Oh, Sleeper one of the powerhouse bands of 2008.
When I Am God has a different range of styles, ranging from soft intros, to pure, against-the-grain metal. My favourite track on the disc is “End of a Dark Campaign”. The track kicks off with Kinard’s vocals, and the rest of the band kicking in seconds later. I absolutely fell in love with the breakdowns and drums. Sex for the ears, guys, I’m telling you.
When I Am God kicks major ass, and being their first full-length album, I can’t imagine what they can do in five years or so. With a touch of post-hardcore and thrash, Oh, Sleeper is a force to be reckoned with. It won’t be long before they headline for bands such as All That Remains and See You Next Tuesday. [ END ]
