The Ocean – “Aeolian”

This is a review on a killer band that I just heard for my first time not too long ago. They go by the name of The Ocean and they are simply put, amazing! The CD is so heavy that it will leave your ears ringing with a smile. The band is such a tight bunch of musicians and the 10 songs on this new album Aeolian are outstanding.

This is a review on a killer band that I just heard for my first time not too long ago. They go by the name of The Ocean and they are simply put, amazing! The CD is so heavy that it will leave your ears ringing with a smile. The band is such a tight bunch of musicians and the 10 songs on this new album Aeolian are outstanding! If you’re into bands such as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, Converge, Meshuggah, or Vision Of Disorder, then this is definitely the next CD you should grab!

It’s more then just music on a disk; it’s all about crazy timing and extreme, break-neck sounds! Have you ever herd of the term “math metal?” Well this is almost that, but in my opinion I would call it “math metalcore.” There is a bit of metal in there, but then there are also a lot of hardcore-style breakdowns and effects. I love all the songs on this CD and I have read in other reviews that this disc itself is just like one big song, but I don’t think they listened to the CD too well.

My favorite songs on this CD are all of them… because they all stand out in their own unique way. One tune that really stands out however, is “Killing The Flies.” It has such a killer grove to it and the guitar riffs are so heavy; the chugs are so catchy and the drums are so perfect… it’s not even funny! The melodic parts in this song are also really well done.

On Aeolian, this German powerhouse isn’t afraid to ask for favors from good friends in good bands. For example, they asked current and former members of underground leading lights such as Converge, Coalesce, and Breacho to hit up some guest vocals. Cool as that may be, singing is so far from the band’s main marketing points. This four-piece have created a bunch of killer songs that more than match those of the respected bands they worked with on Aeolian.

The overall sound of this record is perfect! The guitar tones are thick and sick and when the palm mutes and chugs come in to play they are only heightened. The technical high-noted parts are so clean sounding to my ears, even during distorted parts. The bass is just as good and seems to follow every note the guitars play. The drums are just badass to the max and this guy sure knows how to use a double kick.

The sound of the toms are awesome and all the volumes are mixed perfectly. The vocals are very raw but it fits the music so well… this guy yells like a mad man! It’s more like a very well pitched yelling then screaming. There are a bunch of awesome guest vocalists on this CD witch make this a Metal masterpiece. The mixture of the vocals alone makes this CD one to remember. Over all I give this disc an 8.5 out of 10.  [ END ]
