Album Review
No Alternative
13 Shots (2005)
Oh Canada! Sorry when I review a Canadian band, whether they are “cool” or “un cool” to some, I get patriotic. Oh, what’s this I hear? I’m hearing some sweet East Coast-ness in the opening track, and I’m digging it. I really like how it transitions into a fast paced track, which is numero 2.
Vocally I’m hearing Bizzy D from SUM41; no I didn’t say they copied them did I? I just hear a similar voice, nothing wrong with that. The tracks are all fast paced, catchy and fresh. It’s no insult to say that they add pop rock elements and grunge and call it No Alternative. They service both markets well.
The way the songs are presented is cool if you catch their drift. The last song is entitled “The 13th shot” and their first track is called “Intro.” But if you read the titles it tells a story and how someone would feel before that 13th shot. That’s my explanation of it; we’ll ask the band if we ever interview them. Also, the band lineup is listed under “Hit List”, it all flows people.
The EP reminds me of old school punk rock. The pace, the vocals, and the lyrical content that is. This would be an awesome Warped Tour band; they would definitely draw in a huge crowd. Interesting enough the band lists Metallica, Green Day, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and The Offspring as all being influences and don’t sound anything like any of them. Hmmmm… I’m just bugging y’all.
With the members all in their mid-twenties and having this as their first full length EP, I can see the band growing; keeping true to their punk rock ness. If they market this album well enough, and get it to the right people, big things could happen to this Bowmanville band.
I’m not too fond of the artwork, don’t send hate mail, I just think a cover should grab your attention, if it was more real-like it would have caught a lot more attention, it’s a little plain to me. I can picture a crazy intense live show. Help these guys out and get them on the Warped Tour kids!
