Album Review
Neverset
Behind Every Door (2005)
“This record is for the masses. You have your anthem songs, the mosh pit songs, songs you can sit back and relax to, ones you listen to in order to help you through a break up, and your adrenalin-pumping fight songs.”
– Shawn Hamm of Neverset
That was a pretty good way to sum up one’s own record. At first listen I instantly thought of Linkin Park, vocally that is, not the tone of the vocals just the way both singers go back and forth. Shawn Hamm and Bryce Frazier don’t dual it out, but rather “bring it” together.
The chorus harmonies grab you and the partial yelling keeps you listening, the balance is perfect. They’re not a screamo type band but one with aggression; they know how to use it you know?
Going back to vocals, they are very rap like in the song “Wake Up”. Which is totally cool, who said we couldn’t blur the lines a bit and cross contaminate genres? Nothing out there right now is apparent like this. It’s interesting to say the least.
Every song starts off with a guitar riff. “My Enemy” interestingly enough starts with a piano. The album was produced by Eddie Head and Mastered by Eddie Shreyer, who has mastered albums for Oasis, Korn and Chevelle.
Harder tracks on the album certainly are “My Scars”, “Don’t Wanna Know You”, and “Breathe”. “Headake” is probably the one that will resonate with me the most just because of its creative chorus of “ah ah ah ah ah oh”, and not its lyrical content.
“Blame” is an acoustic track which is refreshing, I’m guessing this is one of the songs that will “help you get through a breakup” Break ups are overrated anyway. This is a really great indie record. Hopefully this will secure, and only add to, the fan base that Neverset has already begun to develop.
Whoa there is a 102.1 The Edge in Dallas too, now that’s trippy. I like this record; I can definitely see this band growing. Even if it’s slowly, in time Neverset will still get there.
7.8 “blame it on the rains” out of 10. [ END ]
